The Netherlands

Why the Netherlands?
Europe was once a place of spiritual revival - in fact, many missionaries who paved the way were sent out of Europe. The Netherlands, too, used to carry the bright light of the gospel. It was even the place to which the Pilgrims fled when facing religious persecution. Today, however, that light has turned to darkness.

RELIGIOSITY
The Netherlands is located in the Northwestern part of Europe, bordering Belgium and Germany. Historically, it has been a place of much religiosity (mostly Catholic and Dutch Reformed); however, it truly is a place of spiritual darkness.
58% of Dutch people now claim no religion whatsoever, let alone biblical Christianity. Compared to the United States at 29%, they have exactly double the rate of "nones." Just ten years ago, the percentage of Dutch nones was 48%. What is happening? Clearly, they are not finding sufficient answers to life in religion, and unfortunately that includes churches which should be carrying the light of the glorious gospel but are not.

SPIRITUALLY BLIND
Of the churches that do exist, the southern regions of the Netherlands are typically more Catholic, while the northern regions tend to lean more Protestant (strongly Dutch Reformed). In general, Catholicism teaches salvation by faith AND works, and Dutch Catholics are rather biblically illiterate. On the other hand, Dutch Reformed people generally have a very thorough knowledge of the Bible. The problem comes with viewing Scripture through the lens of Hyper-Calvinism (read more about this view here - I do not necessarily endorse everything on this website).
LOVE NOT THE WORLD
The root of secularism has also taken deep root in many hearts, making it hard for them to take hold of God's gift, knowing they will have to let go of their god of self. America is conservative in comparison to the shameless immorality celebrated in the Netherlands.

THE TRUTH
Dutch people are still searching, however.
They want to know the truth, and the truth is still setting them free!
